KALMOD, a stochastic-deterministic model for simulating groundwater flow with Kalman filtering

This paper presents the program KALMOD which has been developed to enable the execution of the integration of the Kalman filtering and the numerical groundwater flow model MODFLOW on microcomputers. The program can be applied to quantify and reduce the uncertainty of the groundwater flow model, and to analyse and design groundwater monitoring networks. KALMOD consists of a preprocessor, a processor and a postprocessor. The preprocessor acts as an interface between the user and the processor. The processor manipulates the measurement processes and carries out the filtering tasks. The filtering algorithm is implemented so that it is relatively efficient with respect to computer memory and execution time. The postprocessor was designed to present the model results in graphics. The program is suitable for small scale problems and for educational purposes. KALMOD, une modèle stochastique-déterministe pour simulation de l'eau souterraine avec une filtre de Kalman Résumé Dans cet article, on présent KALMOD, un programme qui permet d'intégrer, sur micro-ordinateur, le filtre de Kalman avec MODFLOW, un simulateur pour l'eau souterraine. Le programme peut être utilisé pour quantifier et réduire les incertitudes qui existent quand on utilise un simulateur comme MODFLOW, mais aussi pour analyser et projeter des réseaux d'observation pour l'eau souterraine. Le programme KALMOD consiste en un pré-procèsseur, un processeur et un post-processeur. Le pré-procèsseur est un intermédiaire entre l'utilisateur et le processeur. Le processeur traite les données et met en oeuvre le filtre de Kalman. L'algorithme de Kalman a été conçu de façon à obtenir une efficacité relative en ce qui concerne la mémoire de l'ordinateur et la durée d'exécution. Le post-processeur permet de présenter les résultats du modèle en graphiques. Le programme peut être utilisé pour des problèmes à petite échelle et pour des objectifs éducatifs.
